Once upon a time, Jewels were stolen from a geo-museum and thousands of geocaching investigators volunteered to help find them around the world.

The Travel Bug® Jeep was one of the first branded geocaching promotions and the first time digital icons were introduced on geocaching profile pages. Over 24,000 trackables were attached to diecast toy Jeeps and released in different color batches from 2004–2007.

The clues were useful! The geocaching investigators succeeded at recovering the lost jewels.

This Treasure is inspired by the 2010 Lackey coin designed to celebrate geocaching’s 10th anniversary.

This trackable personalized coin, created by geocacher (and Lackey) Moun10Bike in 2001, was the first trackable of its kind: a geocoin. A geocoin is a special game piece created by individuals or groups of geocachers as a custom, signature item. In the years since Moun10Bike created the first geocoin, they have become popular trackables for geocachers around the world.

Once they had the recovered stolen goods, geocaching investigators put the jewels back in the vault from which they were stolen, and were rewarded handsomely!

This Treasure represents the Travel Bug® trackable tag, one of the most popular types of trackables. These trackables are metal dog tags with a tracking code and an illustration of a barcode scarab, typically attached to another object.

Some of the first ever Travel Bug® trackable tags went on geocaching missions attached to rubber ducks. Geocaching HQ co-founder, Jeremy Irish, sent out the “Deadly Ducks” on their missions and some of them are still traveling from geocache to geocache.
